Random fact about me: I don’t really read much erotica, but I do enjoy it from time to time if it’s done well.
That being said, this morning I decided to pick one up. This one was called Miranda’s Second Chance and it was written by the beautiful Brandi Ratliff.
The book is about a woman, Miranda, who was getting ready for her bachelorette party camping in the woods with her friends before she was, for lack of a better way to say it, dropped on her butt by her jerkoff fiance, Aaron. She decided to take her camping trip anyways, but left her friends behind so that she could spend her post-breakup mourning period in peace. Drunken hilarity ensues and she runs across a smexy forest ranger named Nate. Aaaand that’s really all I’m giving away about the story line. LOL!
One of my biggest complaints about erotica, in general, is the fact that usually the leading males are portrayed as testosterone-filled a-holes who are just out for a good time just to drop the girl on her butt later. Sometimes she’ll care. Usually she won’t. Doesn’t matter to me, really. Just having to read through him being a complete loser for the entirety of the book is just very unsexy to me and defeats the purpose of a steamy read. I find that sort of attitude extremely distracting. Some readers don’t mind that in the slightest. This reader does.
I have to give this author MAJOR props, because she didn’t write this guy off that way at ALL. At first, he came off as adorable and helpful, and I have to admit, shortly after we meet him in the book he had a moment that I found a bit awkward and almost creepy, but not so much that I couldn’t let it go when we got to know him a bit better. But he TOTALLY redeemed himself and overall I find him humorous and even a bit of a romantic. If I weren’t married, and it were totally possible, I’d almost want to pull him through the pages. LOL!
